(Toronto) The trend to provide “green” design with eco and energy efficient and sustainable products, has arrived in the healthcare facility. The Toronto debut of, “The Green Patient Room” at IIDEX/NeoCon Canada this September 25 & 26 will demonstrate the future possibilities for patient healthcare environments.
The Green Patient room exhibit is a 400 square foot fully sustainable patient room that demonstrates the latest design concepts with regard to patient wellness and caregiver safety. Visitors will be able to experience first hand the benefits of a Green Patient Room. The exhibit is made possible by Anshen & Allen, IIDEX/NeoCon Canada, The IFMA Healthcare Council, Skanska, and participating partners.
Greening the Patient Room creates healing environments that deinstitutionalize healthcare, encourages family visits and care, reduces stress for staff and cultivates well-being and comfort for all users. It illustrates the use of materials and technologies that are sustainable and economically feasible as well as offers functional design.
Greening the patient experience embodies the seven following principals:
Do no harm: create a safe and healthy room for the patient using principals of evidence-based design
Design the indoor environment to promote the health and well-being of staff and families
Provide direct connection to the outdoor environment
Passive survivability: create a place that can function in the face of natural disaster
Minimize the room’s impact on the natural environment through sustainable practices
Intensify the use of technology in patient care
Deinstitutionalize the healthcare environment
There are five key areas that Green Patient Room designers focused on to achieve the above principals; Family Zone: Bringing in the Home, Terrace: The Great Outdoors, Patient Zone: Healing Starts here, Staff Zone: Taking Care of the Caregivers and Patient Bathroom / Building Systems: Conserving Energy and Water.
A Healthcare Symposium will be presented covering all aspects of the patient experience including sustainable healthcare design, the international perspective on healthcare design, human centered design and ageing in place, among many other topics.
