Architecture Keynote

Investigate, Ask, Tell, Draw, Build

Kim Herforth Nielsen
Partner and Principal Architect, 3XN, Copenhagen, Denmark
Friday September 25
4:00-5:00 PM
Keynote Theatre - Free
CEU 0.1

Working within the Scandinavian tradition of functionality, clarity and beauty, Danish architect Kim Herforth Nielsen has established his 20-year-old firm, 3XN, as one of Europe's most imaginative architectural practices. Although its work has been described as poetic, even playful, 3XN says it is simply building the heritage of tomorrow. With projects spanning cultural buildings, corporate headquarters, institutions and urban planning, the firm always takes a user-centred approach. Herforth Nielsen's list of accomplishments includes the Royal Danish Embassy in Berlin, the Music Building in Amsterdam, the multiple-award winning Orestad College and the upcoming Museum of Liverpool, to be completed in 2010. The groundbreaking Lighthouse project, a current collaboration with Amsterdam-based UNStudio, will create a lively residential area on the harbourfront in Aarhus, Denmark, surrounding a single high-rise with terraced houses. Public areas and a seaside promenade will help foster what 3XN considers the all-important "life between buildings." Presenting a number of 3XN's highly regarded projects, Herforth Nielsen will discuss his firm's architectural working method, which springs from five words: investigate, ask, tell, draw, and build.

A graduate of Aarhus School of Architecture in 1981, Herforth Nielsen has lectured at art academies, schools of architecture, conferences and symposia all over the world. He is a judge in the Danish Architectural Association's competitions and has been a jury member in Architectural Review's emerging architecture awards.

Unbuilt Toronto Exhibit

Visions of the Toronto that Could Have Been, Through Projects that Never Were [F15] - Friday, September 26, 2008, 10:00AM - 11:00AM

Seminar: A panel of architects and historians will discuss significant but never-realized projects from Toronto's past, providing a new and often surprising look at Canada's largest city. From towers to subways, highways to whole neighbourhoods, Unbuilt Toronto will look at a number of proposals that either never made it off the drawing board or were constructed in altered or truncated form. Where would city council debate today if Viljo Revell hadn't won the 1958 competition to design the new city hall? Why did we almost lose Union Station? And what's the deal with that Queen Street ghost station?

Unbuilt Toronto Exhibit: Combined with an exhibition of illustrations from the upcoming book of the same name, Unbuilt Toronto will cast a unique light on a city you thought you knew. Presented by the TSA.
