This seminar is based on an in-depth cost-benefit study of the City of Toronto’s newly adopted Green Development Standard. The study is being conducted by a specially selected project team, on behalf of the City of Toronto, the Ontario Centres of Excellence and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The Standard seeks to take a leadership role among cities around the world by encouraging development that delivers the following: better air quality; reduced greenhouse gas emissions and urban heat-island effects; greater energy efficiency; improved water quality and water efficiency; less solid waste; protection of the urban forest and wildlife habitat; and reduced light pollution. The study will provide insight into the true costs and real benefits of green development.

Speaker: Dr. Ted Kesik, P.Eng, is a professor of building science in the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. His research interests include life cycle cost assessment, building envelope performance and durability, urban infrastructure and sustainability. Ted also practises as a consulting engineer and is the author of numerous books, studies, reports and articles. Most recently, he was appointed chair of the Technology Transfer Committee of the Solar Buildings Research Network, funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
