The design industry is trending towards the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM). The concept of BIM is to build virtually before building physically. Like the transition from paper drafting to CAD, the transition to BIM is inevitable. To realize BIM’s potential benefits, we must take a strategic approach towards implementation. In the past, little consideration was given to understanding the impact of technology on design processes and project workflow. Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) is developing a formal BIM strategy. This presentation will use PWGSC as a case study to explain BIM and examine the impact it will have on the design industry.

Speaker: John Hale has been with PWGSC for 16 years, and has extensive experience in developing, implementing and managing the use of CADD, GIS and CAFM applications and solutions. He has been active in developing and implementing CADD management solutions in support of the real property program within the federal government of Canada. John is currently developing an enterprise-level BIM strategy and program.

Daniel Brown is a graduate from the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College. Working at Public Works and Government Services Canada for many years, Mr. Brown is well known for his efforts in technology, performance measurement, client relationship management, the implementation of CAD, as well as information management for the Real Property Branch.  Mr. Brown directs a national team of geomatics services within PWGSC that provide products and common geomatics services in real property to the government of Canada in domains such as land, building and engineering surveying, cartography, hydrography, GIS and CAFM technologies.

Due to recent interest on Building Information Modeling on the part of industry, Mr. Brown has been talking with government and private sector organization to better position PWGSC and in the hope of attaining as many benefits as possible offered by a technology that better integrates project delivery.
