This presentation is about urban lighting. It will offer a case study, from schematic design to implementation, of the Royal Ontario Museum, a national cultural landmark. The challenge of mixing heritage and contemporary architecture in the nocturnal cityscape will be discussed. The session aims to raise the profile of urban lighting and ambiance among professionals and management. Attendees will see how the methodology described for performing a typical lighting study can be applied in other contexts.

Speaker: For over 20 year, Gilles Arpin practised theatrical work as head electrician, lighting director and designer, technical director, and production manager, involved mainly with opera, ballet and musicals. A passion for cities led him to study urbanism for two years, where he learned that a new discipline was emerging in urban design. In 1996, he founded EclairagePublic inc., a firm dedicated to lighting public spaces. Gilles believes urban lighting design is not only a matter of city ornamentation, but also a way to appeal to our sociality, in the name of safety, comfort and ambiance.

All lighting seminars at IIDEX/NeoCon Canada 2008 are accredited for LC credits.
