In this session, a seasoned design librarian and a green designer will explore the following: the principles involved in product evaluation using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model; existing third-party rating systems (LEED, Green Globes, BEES) and their objectives; third-party certification organizations and standards that will help you develop your own library product evaluation system; online research tools, books, DVDs and magazines; organizational tools that assist in sharing green product research with staff, clients and suppliers; and reducing your library’s environmental footprint.
Speaker: As library manager in HOK’s Toronto office, Daina Leja is responsible for new product research, reference books, periodicals and maintenance of HOK’s online database of building products, design services, codes and standards. She has over 30 years of experience as a design librarian. Before joining HOK, she managed libraries for some of Canada’s major architectural and design practices and with her own consulting firm. Daina has a BA Hon in modern history from the University of Toronto.
As area leader with HOK’s Sustainable Design Group in Toronto, Sandra Lester works with market sector teams to identify sustainable design opportunities and develop sustainable targets and strategies. Her areas of expertise include evolving technologies, sustainable finishes, design for resiliency and adaptability, and social and organizational change. She holds a B.Tech in architectural science from Ryerson University.
