The Royal York is Toronto’s “GREENEST HOTEL”

  • In April 2005, The Fairmont Royal York became the first commercial property in the City of Toronto to be awarded $48,685.00 for its efforts to reduce water use. Earlier that year, we installed a commercial water softener that reduced water use in the laundry to one wash and one rinse per cycle, saving 476,000 litres of water per day (enough water to supply 500 homes).
  • In November 2006, The Fairmont Royal York was again recognized as a Business Leader in Waste Minimization, receiving the Gold Level Business Award from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO).
  • Temperature controls have been installed in public meeting rooms saving $75,000 yearly which provides an instant monitoring of the rooms
  • The hotel’s recycling program includes the following items; office paper, newspaper, coloured glass, clear glass, aluminium, tin, plastics, cardboard, batteries, compost, toner cartridges, motor oil, fluorescent light bulbs, kitchen grease, and construction/renovation waste.
  • Over the span of 21 years, the hotel has donated over 400,000 lbs of food to Second Harvest that would have otherwise gone to waste.
  • Rooftop Herb Garden Taking gardening to new heights and compost to good use, The Fairmont Royal York has constructed an organic, rooftop herb garden.
