Environmental Keynote. Ronald Wright
Author and Historical Philosopher
Friday, September 23 . 9:00 - 10:00 AM
A Short History of Progress - The 20th century was a time of runaway growth in human numbers, consumption and technology. The great question of the 21st century is how, or whether, this can go on. In 2004 Ronald Wright gave the prestigious CBC Massey Lectures, also published as the book A Short History of Progress - a concise history of the world since Neanderthal times. In the IIDEX NeoCon environmental keynote, he will demonstrate how human beings have a way of walking into “progress traps,” beginning with the worldwide slaughter of big game late in the Stone Age. The same pattern of waste and folly then took new forms, as many of the world’s most creative civilizations - Mesopotamia, the Maya, ancient Rome and Easter Island - fell victim to their own success. Only by understanding the human pattern of progress and disaster, Wright persuasively argues, can we hope to change our ways and give civilization itself a long-term future.
Ronald Wright is an award-winning novelist, historian and essayist. His nonfiction works include the number-one bestseller Stolen Continents, and his first novel, A Scientific Romance, won the 1997 David Higham Prize for Fiction and was a Globe and Mail, Sunday Times and New York Times Book of the Year.

Architectural Keynote. Stefan Behnisch
Architect and Partner, Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner
Friday, September 23 . 3:30 - 4:30 PM
Possible Architectural Responses to Structural Changes in Society - Social and economic structures have forged the history of mankind. Today, we are moving through a post-industrial transitional phase on our way to becoming a knowledge-based society. How are architects responding to these changes? Until now we have allowed ourselves the luxury of designing buildings for highly specific purposes, such as living, working, storage or leisure. As well, our notions of designing flexible space have been limited by and large to the inclusion of moveable walls. German architect Stefan Behnisch believes it’s time for a radical rethinking of these concepts. He will discuss the design of truly hybrid buildings that allow people to live and work, and to communicate effectively for multiple purposes, all in one place.
Stefan Behnisch is known for his innovative, environmentally conscious designs. He and his team of architects have worked on numerous projects around the world, ranging from single-family houses to city complexes. Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner, which has offices in Stuttgart, Germany and Los Angeles, currently has two projects underway in Ontario: the Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research at the University of Toronto, and a research park in Kingston that will include the headquarters of Millenium Biologix.
