As we age, the manner in which we see and our ability to see is modified. Physical changes within the eyes themselves negatively and sometimes drastically alter the way we envision a task or space. A proper lighting design can accommodate for the changes and allow us to function acceptably and comfortably in every space in the home. Flooring Fidelity – Challenges and Opportunities in Hospitality Design [T10]

Choice of flooring for hospitality environments impacts on many levels, some of which are usually not even contemplated through relevant to holistic vision. Preconceived design solutions, capital budgets, decision making process and time restraints can result in choices that are expedient but uninspired, falling short of what is optimal. Compliance: New Regulations Affecting Facility Managers [T21]

Three new laws have increased the facility manager’s personal liability. Bill C-45 states that an owner (facility manager) can be held criminally responsibly for acts of negligence associated with construction projects in their owned or leased premises. Bill 124, which becomes law in Ontario on January 1, 2006, names the facility manager as one of those persons responsible for projects requiring a building permit. Bill 118, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, stipulates the development, implementation and enforcement of standards of accessibility with respect to facilities, employment and buildings. This seminar will teach attendees what they need to know about these important pieces of legislation. [int.]

LEED and the Bottom Line - The New SAS Toronto Headquarters - A Case Study

The newly completed corporate headquarters for SAS Canada, the largest independent software company in the world, is one of Toronto’s first LEED-certified buildings. Its structural concrete contains a high percentage of recycled material, its rainwater collection and treatment system reduces water consumption, and its energy consumption will be 30 to 50 per cent less than that of a comparable, conventionally designed building. These and other environmentally responsible aspects of the SAS Canada headquarters will be described by the architect, the LEED-accredited professional advisor, and SAS Canada’s Real Estate Manager. Solving Ergonomics Problems in the Office with Paul White
Many people know the basics of office ergonomics now and can set up a workstation that will pass muster when judged by the various standards. Most offices now have “ergonomic furniture”. Yet, some users still experience discomfort, pain and injury. What’s to be done? Using a series of case studies drawn from his ergonomics practice, Paul White will discuss some of the more subtle cues for diagnosing the causes of user problems and will present effective ways to solve these problems. In his 20-year career in industrial and office ergonomics, health and safety programming, and training, he was the Provincial Ergonomist at the Ontario Ministry of Labour where he was responsible for the development of ergonomics policy, regulations and guidelines and the technical supervision of field ergonomists.
